9 meteorological subdivisions receive scanty rainfall

Chennai , July 17

The west coast and central parts of the country are likely to witness widespread rainfall during the weekend. Rainfall activity could increase in east Rajasthan and north-western parts of the country, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

During the next two-three days, rainfall activity is likely to increase in west Madhya Pradesh, east Rajasthan, central Maharashtra and Gujarat. Also, widespread rainfall could occur on the Konkan and Goa coast, including Mumbai, IMD said in its daily report.

Chhattisgarh, east Madhya Pradesh and Vidharbha could experience very heavy rainfall at a few places, it said.

Monsoon so far

Meanwhile, 27 out of the 36 meteorological sub-divisions in the country have excess or normal rainfall during June 1-July 12 period. The rest have received scanty rainfall with east Madhya Pradesh being the region where the rainfall received has been 61 per cent lower than normal at 112 mm.

Telangana, east Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Punjab are places where there has been 20 to 59 per cent lower than normal rainfall.

A majority of the places in the South and North have received normal rainfall, while Gujarat and central Maharashtra have received excess rainfall.

Against the normal weighted 272.7 per cent of rainfall that should have been received up to July 12, the actual has been 10 per cent lower.

However, if the fact that monsoon had set in early towards the last week of May is taken into account, then the actual deficiency in rainfall is less than four per cent.
