Centre conducts study to prepare Business Registry

K.V. Kurmanath

Hyderabad , July 16

The Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has initiated a unique study that would attempt to map all business activity that takes place across the country.

A comprehensive Business Registry will not only help the Government to have a holistic picture of the economic activity, but will also help private enterprises to get to know what sort of units are situated in a particular geographical region. Besides indicating the potential of markets, the registry will help gauge mortality rates of the units that usually go unnoticed.

PILOT STUDY

To begin with, a pilot study has been carried out in Andhra Pradesh with the objective of creating a business registry comprising all industrial units that employ more than 20 workers.

The State Directorate of Economics and Statistics had conducted a census across the State to figure out how many of them were actually functioning. The other parameters looked into were the wage bill, nature of activity and the exact location, Dr Saroja Rama Rao, Director of the Directorate, told Business Line.

Based on the recommendations of National Statistical Commission the Standing Committee on Industrial Statistics had decided to conduct the study in Andhra Pradesh in order to identify the problems involved in the preparation of a Business Registrar.

ACCURACY

In order to get micro-level information, the Government had constituted State-level and district-level coordination committees involving senior officials. The information was segregated district-wise, verified and updated mandal-wise.

Though the final tally of the units stood at 12,000, those really functioning were found to be just 6,000, indicating high mortality rates. The directorate plans to update the registry annually, she said.
