Mumbai , July 11

Around 32,000 employees of the Central Bank of India participated in an all-India strike on Tuesday against the bank's management.

The strike was total in Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Bhopal, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Patna, Jamshedpur, Goa, Pune, Nagpur, Cuttack, Imphal and Sikkim. Clearing operations could not be transacted in most of the centres and transactions in almost all the branches were stopped.

Unilateral actions

"The strike was against the unilateral actions of the management on issues concerning employees, officers and their trade union rights," said a press release from the bank's unions.

According to the unions, terminal and retirement benefits of the staff are not being sanctioned and hundreds of vacancies have remained unfilled. They also say that trade union leaders are being transferred with a view to cripple the normal functioning of the unions. The management has so far refused to agree with the union's proposals, said the release.

The participating unions include All India Central Bank Employees' Federation, All India Central Bank Employees' Congress, All India Central Bank Officers' Association, Rashtriya Central Bank Officers' Congress and Central Bank Employees Federation of India.

The union members had a conciliation meeting with the Deputy Chief Labour Commissioner on Monday. The joint meeting of the unions will take place on July 13 to decide on the further course of action, including further strike.
