BelAir closes BPO centre in Bangalore

Bangalore , July 9

UK-based BelAir Communications has hung up on its call centre in Bangalore.

A month after Apple Computers shut down its BPO (business process outsourcing) centre, the London-based firm has pulled the plug on its operations. The reasons, in both cases, are unknown.

BelAir Communications was outsourcing transaction processing and call centre services to its Bangalore centre. It began operations here a year ago and employed 93 people.

On June 10, the employees were orally informed that they were fired. They immediately approached the Union for IteS Professionals (UNITES) India in the city. According to the complaint filed, BelAir Communications India has not paid the 60+ employees salaries and incentives from May 2006.

"We have taken immediate action and will be taking this to the Labour court. We have also approached the Indian High Commissioner at UK to take this up with BelAir," said Mr R. Karthik Shekhar, General Secretary, UNITES India. The Labour Commissioner has been contacted to conduct an enquiry and initiate appropriate action against the firm under the Industrial Dispute Act 1947.
