Kochi , June 29 Exports of spices during April-May 2006 increased in value, while it declined in terms of volume. Pepper, cardamom (small), ginger, cumin, celery, garlic, vanilla and curry powder/ paste were the items in the spices basket whose exports increased. The increase in pepper shipments is attributed to the competitive price supported by export subsidy. The unit value of pepper fell to Rs 81.70 a kg from Rs 93.14. Though the exports of vanilla went up by four tonnes to 18 tonnes, its unit value fell sharply to Rs 1,141.58 a kg from Rs 2,353 a kg. Total exports stood at Rs 406.74 crore as against Rs 388.52 crore in the same period a year ago, while in terms of volume it dropped to 57,508 tonnes from 61,808 tonnes, Board sources told Business Line.
Chilli down
Increased availability from other origins has pushed down the chilli exports, which fell to 14,000 tonnes from 22,372 tonnes last year. Turmeric also showed a marginal decline to 10,250 tonnes from 10,443 tonnes. Garlic exports increased substantially to 7,500 tonnes from 3,829 tonnes. Poor crop in other producing countries has pushed up the exports of this commodity. The unit value also rose to Rs 12.60 from Rs 12.05 a kg. Among the value added items, mint products dropped to 1,800 tonnes from 2,061 tonnes, while the exports of spice oils and oleoresins declined to 925 tonnes from 938 tonnes in April - May last year. Increase in unit value of some of the products has led to the increase in total value. In dollar terms, the total exports stood at $90.02 million as against $89.13 million. The Spices Board has set an export target of three lakh tonnes valued at Rs 2,400 crore for the current fiscal.
