The Kerala State Committee of Cable TV Operators' Association froze channel operations on Wednesday for 12 hours from 6 a.m. in protest against the introduction of five per cent luxury tax on cable operators in the revised State budget.
It was also decided to hold a dharna before the State Secretariat on July 3 in protest against the Government's decision. According to Mr E. Jayadevan, State President of the Association, the new tax will be a major setback for small-scale operators who have launched their ventures as a means of self-employment.
`Crisis situation'
It comes at a time when the operators are facing rising cost of operations, he said and drew attention to pay channel rates that had more than doubled of late, high electricity tariff under slab 7A and rental rate for electricity posts that had gone up from Rs 17 to Rs 108.
He also said that the five per cent tax was being imposed when the cable operators were contemplating at least a 20 per cent hike in charges to keep the business going.
The Association also appealed to the Government to reconsider its view of cable television as a luxury when it serves to provide news and entertainment to families.
