Hyderabad , June 28

The Resource Alliance, the UK-based organisation that supports NGOs in building capacities, has announced the 2006 edition of the `The India NGO Award' and invited NGOs in the region to take part in the competition.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr Simon Collings, Chief Executive Officer of Resource Alliance, said the initiative was aimed at promoting best practices that ultimately increase the credibility of NGOs.

The awards would help NGOs enhance governance, accountability, transparency and resource mobilisation abilities.

"Indian NGOs suffer from weaknesses like lack of credibility and resources," he said.

Seminars in 4 regions

The Resource Alliance has tied up with Nand and Jeet Khemka Foundation to organise the competition. The organisation would organise seminars in four regions, covering all the States, focussing on governance and resource mobilisation.

Mr Simon said the organisation had tied up business schools in India, Malaysia and Kenya to offer courses in resource mobilisation. "In India, we are offering this course in a Mumbai school. We are going to expand this to business schools in other metros and other countries in the next 12 months," he said.

"The awards will encourage NGOs to adopt a professional approach and to build up credibility," Mr Ali Asghar of COVA (an association of NGOs) said.

The awards included a first prize for the `Best NGO of the Year (with a cash prize of $20,000) and second prize ($10,000).

Meanwhile, Khemka Foundation in association with Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship and UNDP, has announced a separate award - Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award-2006.
