The Hindu Business Line : GoM to study AP school education system

In order to improve the quality of education in the State, the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said a Group of Ministers (GoM) would be constituted to study the functioning of the school education system.

After a review meeting on the performance of school education department in the State, Dr. Reddy said the proposed GoM would be asked to take up a detailed study of education for children and submit recommendations and possible reforms.

The GoM would comprise Ministers for School Education, Panchayat Raj, Finance, Municipal Administration and Social Welfare. The GoM will review issues such as curriculum, structure and teacher requirement skills, according to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office. Dr Reddy agreed to post a Secretary in the Education Department to look after other related subjects in School Education Department such as Libraries and Adult Literacy among other areas for the smooth and effective functioning of those sections.

Hedirected the officials to engage the services of the engineering wing of Scheduled Castes Corporation to construct school buildings and effectively run them. The members of women self-help groups (SHGs) should be targeted for education under Total Literacy Campaign, he added. He stressed the need for imparting vocational education among the school going children and more infrastructure facilities to be developed in residential schools.

He observed that 94 Kasturba Gandhi Vidyalayas, imparting education to girl children up to only eighth class, should be upgraded. Additionally, 40 schools, which were sanctioned already, should become operational from this academic year in Tribal areas.

Requisite funds should be earmarked for timely distribution of textbooks, he said. Since Badi Baata, a Statewide programme for drop out children is yielding favourable results, the drop out rate is on the decline and enrolment of children is high.
