People must be aware of electoral rights: CM

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , June 23

The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has asked the people to be aware of their electoral rights and responsibilities and make sure that their names figured in the voters' list.

Making light of the allegations levelled against the Congress Government with regard to irregularities in the electoral rolls, he pointed out that people needed to verify whether names figured in the list.

Addressing a press conference in the backdrop of a Division Bench of the High Court allowing the election process to continue, the Chief Minister found fault with the Telugu Desam Party for the controversy over the rolls.

The Election Commission could punish those who were responsible for the irregularities, if any.

The increase in the number of eligible voters was a natural phenomenon. And there was no abnormal increase as was alleged. The number of electors in rural areas had gone up to 3.90 crore as on January 2006 as against 3.82 lakh as on January 2004. "There is no abnormality in this," he said.
