BJP stages dharna at ONGC complex venue

Mangalore , June 23

Members of the BJP staged a dharna at the venue of the foundation stone laying ceremony for the ONGC petrochemicals complex in Mangalore on Friday.

They initially said that the ceremony should not be postponed on account of the absence of the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, and then they blamed the officials for not maintaining protocol while inviting the people's representatives.

As soon as the gathering came to know about the cancellation of the Prime Minister's visit to Mangalore, the Mangalore MP, Mr D.V. Sadananda Gowda, who is also the State BJP President, said that the ceremony should be continued as the people of the region have been waiting for this project for quite a long time.

He wanted the ONGC Chairman to explain the reasons for cancellation.

After the Acting Chairman of the ONGC, Mr R.S. Sharma, announced the postponement of the ceremony, Mr Gowda said that the protocol has not been maintained while inviting the people's representatives to the ceremony, and sought an explanation from the Chairman.

Officials did not bother to adhere to protocol while inviting people's representatives to the ceremony, he said.

"We are not opposing the postponement of the programme. We are against the attitude of the officials."

Mr Sharma pacified the members. After the problem was settled amicably, the BJP members withdrew their half-an-hour dharna and promised to work together in future for the development projects in the region.
