Goldstone, SPL to set up S'pore office

IPTV services for Indian diaspora

Singapore , June 22

Goldstone Technologies Ltd, the Hyderabad-based technology services provider, is in the process of setting up a joint venture in Singapore along with SPL Innotech Pte Ltd, for its IP (Internet Protocol) TV services.

The company plans to invest Rs 7 crore in its Singapore centre, to be based out of SPL's facility in UBI Tech Park here that would host a data centre.

The Director of Goldstone Technologies, Mr P.V. Narasimha Rao, said that the company plans to offer Video on Demand services over the Internet Protocol (IP) based television network. The company will offer its IPTV services from August.

Goldstone has created a bank of about 7,500 movies in various Indian languages — Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada etc., and has zeroed in on the Indian diaspora spread across the globe with its IPTV services. Most of these people spread across crave for Indian entertainment and the best way to reach them is over the public Internet, Mr Rao explained.

"We have also partnered with Vin Infotech to offer these services in Mauritius. The island country does not have a proper satellite feed, hence most of the Indian channels are not accessible," Mr Rao said. Speaking to Business Line, the The Director of the Singapore-based SPL Innotech, Mr Nanadan Kundetkar, said that the roll out of the services in the US would be followed by similar services in other countries.

Displaying how the IPTV works at the Broadcast Asia 2006 Summit, Mr Kundetkar said everybody speaks about IPTV as the next big wave. But yet there is hardly much standardisation. Apart from a television set, an IPTV user would need a broadband connection and a set-top box and potentially access hundreds of channels and enjoy video on demand services. As the volumes increase, the cost of the box, which would be about $130 to $150 is likely to come down. The revenue model is being worked out. Mr Kundetkar said "apart from entertainment, we are looking at other services such as governance, healthcare and education, for offering IPTV services.
