Mangalore , June 17 The Director-General of Foreign Trade, Mr K.T. Chacko, has stressed the need for a sustainable export for the growth of the country. Speaking at a seminar on `Export from coastal Karnataka: Vision 2010,' jointly organised by the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) and the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) in Mangalore on Friday evening, Mr Chacko said export was a durable way of ensuring that India had confident positions in the years to come in maintaining foreign reserves. Stating that the country cannot do way with some of the essential imports, he said there was a need for sustainable export for growth. For this, the country should compete with quality and price with the other market economies. Mr Walter D'Souza, convenor of FIEO Committee on Agro Exports and AEZ, said coastal Karnataka could achieve Rs 25,000 crore of exports by 2010 if proper focus and encouragement was given in this regard.
He hoped that the export target for 2006-07 would be achieved comfortably.
Mr D'Souza, who is also the Chairman of the Cashew Export Promotion Council of India, said cashew sector had the merit to create large-scale employment, and it should be included in the list of Focus Product Scheme of the Union Government.
