The Ministry of Small Scale Industry's (MSSI) effort to streamline the process of getting reimbursement for the cost of acquisition of an ISO 9000/ISO 14001 certification seems to be paying off.
The Ministry reimbursed 4,101 small units last fiscal and 3,314 units in the previous fiscal. The Ministry, under its incentive scheme of ISO 9000/ISO 14001 Quality System, reimburses up to 75 per cent of the total cost of acquisition of such certification (or similar certification) by a registered small unit, subject to a maximum of Rs 75,000 per unit.
A total of Rs 19.44 crore was disbursed in 2005-2006 and Rs 17.33 crore in 2004-2005.
The number of units availing themselves of the reimbursement was 992 in 2001-2002 (with Rs 6 crore reimbursed); 1,182 in 2002-2003 (with Rs 6.99 crore reimbursed) and 917 in 2003-2004 (with Rs 4.77 crore reimbursed).
The cumulative figure for the units having availed themselves of the scheme since its inception in March 1994 stood at 11,890 as of March this year with reimbursement of Rs 62.8 crore.
