AP Govt to provide over Rs 10,000 cr for SHGs

The Andhra Pradesh Government is contemplating providing more than Rs 10,000 crore in the next three years for the enhancement of the economic conditions of women Self Help Groups (SHGs) under Pavala Vaddi initiative through Indira Kranthi Patham (IKP).

The State has about six lakh SHGs with 78 lakh women in 27,000 village organisations and 910 mandal samakhyas, covering 87 per cent of rural poor. It is targeted to provide loan assistance of about Rs 3,000 crore covering three lakh women SHGs consisting of 36 lakh members in 2006-07.

The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said the Pavala Vaddi Scheme, which envisaged Government subsidy to ensure that the SHG women paid less interest on bank loans was intended to provide economic assistance to the deserving and eligible beneficiaries to take up activities in agriculture, marketing, dairy etc.

He was speaking on the occasion of releasing a book Empowerment of Rural Women Through Self Help Groups, written by Dr B. Suguna, Associate Professor, Department of Women Studies, Sri Padmavathi Mahila Viswavidyalayam, in his chambers in the Secretariat.
