Shipping States - Kerala CPT warns against extortion V. Sajeev Kumar
Kochi , June 13 The Cochin Port Trust Chairman, Mr N. Ramachandran, has reiterated that strict action would be taken against those who indulge in illegal collection of money from container trailers plying in and around Willingdon Island. His reaction comes in the wake of arrest of two persons on Monday for illegally collecting money from trailers from the port area under the behest of a trade union in the port. He warned that such action in whatever name is "illegal, unconventional and unethical". Earlier, a meeting convened by the Chairman last week to discuss the issues relating to container transportation had decided to stop collecting money illegally from trailers and also made it clear that no association or union will be permitted to collect money in whatever name from the trailers. Irrespective of the decision taken at the meeting, he said the port had information that certain groups belonging to one of the trade unions had again started collecting money on Monday from trailers. Surreptitiously, the matter was reported to the police by the port and the police took action by arresting two persons.
