Anand (Gujarat) , June 12 The Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) has achieved 29 per cent growth to close the fiscal with a record turnover of Rs 3,773.55 crore, even as Amul ice-cream has emerged the market leader. The fiscal gone by saw 31 per cent rise in sales of milk pouches, which contributed Rs 900 crore to the kitty, up from Rs 626 crore last year, a Federation report said.
Achievements
Stating these achievements at the 32nd AGM, Mr Partibhai Dhatol, Chairman, said that milk procurement in 2005-06 had reached an average of 6.40 million kg a day. The members' union of the GCMMF registered nine per cent growth in milk procurement during this year. In order to boost the growth, the Federation also commissioned a new milk powder plant in Gandhinagar. This plant, with a capacity to produce 100 tonnes of milk powder a day, is equipped with world-class technology and will be helpful in processing surplus milk from the union, he said. Paying glowing tributes to Dr Varghese Kurien, Founder-Chairman of GCMMF, Mr Dhatol, at the very outset, acknowledged the great contribution made by him to the development of the country's dairy sector and to the rise of GCMMF as the leader in this sector.
To continue expansion
"Today, we cannot but gaze with wonder at the marvel he has created in the form of a noble system of collection of milk, adding value to it and marketing it through a professionally managed marketing organisation. The beauty of the system is that the farmers remain in full ownership of it at every step of procuring of the value chain." He also said that GCMMF now plans to continue its business expansion with the same vision and spread and achieve 20 per cent growth during the coming year and reach sales turnover of Rs 4,500 crore. On export performance, Mr Dhatol said that the GCMMF exported Rs 134.23 crore worth of dairy products during the year, the highest-ever by any dairying business in India. Referring to the WTO regime, he urged the Government to ensure that the interests of farmers and the developmental needs of the country are safeguarded during negotiations on reduction on agriculture subsidies and tariffs.
If subsidies are reduced in the developed world's international prices of dairying commodities, our domestic products would be able to compete on more even terms in the market, he added.
Ultra-heat Treated (UHT) milk grew in value terms by 12 per cent; it commands 60 per cent market share.
The report said that Amul ice-cream registered an 18 per cent growth during the year and strengthened its position as the market leader. Similarly, Amul ghee clocked 18 per cent growth and Amul curd 25 per cent.
