User verification drive to cost Rs 500 cr to operators

New Delhi , June 8

From now on, cellular subscribers will have to pay for their own verification. Private cellular operators may pass on the cost incurred by them in verifying the details of each and every mobile user in the country, estimated around Rs 500 crore a year, to the consumers themselves. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has given a five-month deadline to the operators to verify the details of all the 65 million pre-paid mobile subscribers.

Mr T.V. Ramachandran, Director General, Cellular Operators Association of India, said, "The tariffs being low as it is, we will not be able to take the additional burden of the cost incurred on verifying subscribers. We are also negotiating with the Department of Posts (DoP) to bring down the charges for carrying out the verification." Mobile operators — both GSM and CDMA — have entered into an agreement with the DoP to verify the subscriber base at a fixed charge per subscriber

Meanwhile, the Apex Council for Telecom, the joint industry body formed to tighten up the subscriber verification process, met on Tuesday to decide on the future course of action.
