Overseas manufacturing cos eye India to source components

"The challenge before Indian suppliers is to maintain quality and ensure timely delivery.''

Chennai , June 8

ACMEE 2006, a five-day industrial exhibition organised by the Ambattur Industrial Estate Manufacturers' Association, opened on Thursday with speakers highlighting the opportunities for the Indian engineering industry to tap global markets.

Mr Les Ball, Director - Global Sourcing & European Region, Supply Chain Management, Eaton Industries, said globally manufacturing companies were looking to source components from cost-effective locations like India.

The challenge before Indian suppliers was to maintain quality and ensure timely delivery. Eaton, for instance, he later told presspersons, was actively looking to source components from countries such as India and China.

However, he declined to say the value of components that the company was sourcing from India.

Eaton has a global sourcing office in Pune. It is a $10-billion diversified industrial manufacturer with interests in electrical, fluid power, automotive and truck.

Inaugurating the exhibition, the Tamil Nadu Governor, Mr S.S. Barnala, said Indian industry had to adopt an engineering management system that help in achieving product release at the most advantageous time.

The industry should also constantly thrive to improve quality and provide efficient after sale service.

Auto components fair

Along with the exhibition, the organisers are also holding a global auto components sourcing fair, which opens on Friday. The exhibition is on at the Chennai Trade Centre.

According to Mr K.S. Jeyaraman, convenor, ACMEE 2006, the organisers expect Rs 100-crore worth of business to be transacted during the industrial exhibition.

The exhibition is spread over 11,500 sq ft and includes participants from Thailand, France and China.

The Ambattur Industrial Estate Manufacturers Association is hoping that amenities will be improved at the industrial estate, spread over 1,500 acres, for which a separate company has been formed.

The association also said there was space to put up an information technology park.
