Agro-input traders' forum seeks import of DAP

Our Correspondent

Madurai , June 6

The Tamilnadu Agro-input Traders Association has urged the State Government to take immediate steps for the import of diammonium phosphate (DAP) with the forthcoming agricultural season appearing bright in the State in general and in the Cauvery delta region in particular.

With the anticipation of an early onset of monsoon this year, the association expects a sudden rise in the area under paddy cultivation with a corresponding rise in demand for fertiliser and other agricultural inputs.

The association, in a meeting held at Tiruchi recently, expressed deep concern over the non-manufacture of fertilisers and other basic inputs by leading companies, owing to the non-availability of the raw material - namely, phosphoric acid.

According to an estimate by the association, for both the kharif and rabi season this year, 3.6 lakh tonnes of DAP and murate of potash each, nine lakh tonnes of urea, four lakh tonnes of complex and one lakh tonnes of single super phosphate would be required in the State.
