New groundnut variety

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, June 1

Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, presented the groundnut variety ICGV 91114 developed by the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) to a group of farmers of Anantapur district at a function organised at the Patancheru campus of ICRISAT on Thursday. Appreciating ICRISAT for developing the new variety, Dr Reddy said it would help farmers get a higher yield facing even hostile weather conditions. Trials showed that the new variety could give 10 per cent higher yields in the drought-prone district. On an average, farmers grew groundnut in over eight lakh hectares, accounting for nearly 70 per cent of the cultivated area in the district.
