Industrial growth dips to 8 pc in 2005-06

The growth in industrial production has slowed down to 8 per cent during 2005-06 as against 8.4 per cent in the previous year.

The growth rate in all sectors were lower during 2005-06 compared to 2004-05 with the mining sector registering the lowest growth at 0.7 per cent as against 4.4 per cent in 2004-05. The manufacturing sector registered a growth of 9 per cent compared to 9.2 per cent in 2004-05 and electricity sector grew by 5.1 per cent compared to 5.2 per cent during the previous year, according to an official release.

March growth up

The general Index of Industrial Production (IIP) for March 2006 stands at 249.2, which is 7.7 per cent higher, as compared to 231.4 in the March 2005. The index for mining, manufacturing and electricity sectors for the month of March 2006 stood at 179.0, 264.5, and 202.5 respectively, with the corresponding growth rates of 0.5 per cent, 8.9 per cent and 3.2 per cent as compared to March 2005. In terms of industries, 10 out of the 17 industry groups have shown positive growth during March 2006 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.

The industry group `Other Manufacturing Industries' has shown the highest growth of 34.7 per cent, followed by 23.5 per cent in basic metal and alloy industries and 18.9 per cent in `Beverages, Tobacco and Related Products'. On the other hand, the industry group `Wood and Wood Product, Furniture and Fixtures' has shown a negative growth of 20.7 per cent followed by 16.8 per cent in `Paper & Paper Products and Printing, Publishing & Allied Industries' and 9.9 per cent in `Leather and Leather & Fur Products'.
