Cardamom prices fluctuate

Higher arrivals overshadow buying support

Kochi , May 11

The individual average price of cardamom kept on fluctuating at the auctions held in Kerala and Tamil Nadu during the week.

Though there was buying support, the average price at the auctions did not go beyond Rs 200 a kg. It has been fluctuating between Rs 190 and Rs 200 a kg. The reason attributed to the low prices is the increased arrivals.

The total arrivals as on May 10, 2006, stood at 8,865 tonnes as against 4,683 tonnes in the corresponding period last year. The sales this year was at 8,276 tonnes (4,348 tonnes).

The overall weighted average price for the current season was Rs 215.18 as against Rs 303.82 a kg.

The highest price on Wednesday at the Cardamom Processing and Marketing Company (CPMC), Kumily, was Rs 390 a kg for 8 mm bold green capsules, which constituted 600 kg. All the 57 tonnes that arrived was sold, Mr P.C. Punnoose, General Manager, CPMC, told Business Line.

He said the dealers were very active and they were buying to cater to small retail markets.

Export demand

However, export demand continued to be very thin, he said.

The average prices of graded varieties as on May 6 were AGEB Rs 290-300, AGB Rs 210-220, AGS Rs 195-205 and AGS1 Rs 165-175 a kg. Local market prices at Bodinayakannur on Thursday were AGEB Rs 270-280, AGB Rs 200-205, AGS Rs 195-205 and AGS 1 Rs 165-175, and bulk was being sold at Rs 180-230 a kg.
