`Power plants may miss deadline'
Our Bureau
New Delhi, May 5
The capacity expansion targets in as many as 47 power plants in the country may miss the 2007 deadline. The capacity addition achieved in these plants so far stands at 14,301 MW against the revised target of 32,778 MW in the 10th Plan period (2002-2007), according to an Assocham study.
The shortfall works out to be 18,477 MW. The study estimates that by the end of the Plan period in March next year the capacity addition of about 10,000 MW will be achieved and the shortfall will still be over 8,000 MW, according to the study.
As a result of non-commissioning additional capacity, Central Electricity Authority has reduced the capacity addition programme for the present plan to 32,778 MW, which was earlier fixed at 41,110 MW. There are 10 plants in the Northern region and 16 plants in the Western region that are running behind schedule. Similarly, there are eight plants in the Northern region, 11 plants in the Southern region and two plants in the North-East region that are running behind the March 2007 deadline, according to the study.
