DoT demands foolproof verification of mobile users

Thomas K. Thomas

New Delhi , May 4

The Department of Telecom (DoT) has hauled up mobile operators, both GSM and CDMA, for not adhering to stipulated procedures for verifying subscribers before allotting a connection. DoT has said in a letter to the operators that the instructions given by security agencies were not being implemented, leading to difficulties in tracking down subscribers. The Government has summoned all the operators to a meeting on May 9 to discuss the issue.

"It has been observed that operators are not adhering to the instructions given from time to time regarding verification of a customer before enrolling them as a subscriber due to which security agencies are finding it difficult to trace a target subscriber," DoT has told the operators.

DoT has asked the operators to come up with measures to help adhere to the instructions on subscriber verification.

Advisory council

The operators on their part have joined hands to form the Apex Advisory Council for Telecom (ACT) in India to help make the mobile subscriber verification procedures foolproof as per the instructions of the security agencies. The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), representing the GSM operators, and the Association of Unified Telecom Service Providers of India (AUSPI) have come under the umbrella of the apex council to formulate guidelines for subscriber verification. The operators are also roping in the Department of Post's nationwide network of post-offices and postmen to assist in the subscriber verification procedure.
