Move will boost exports from the region

Mangalore , May 4

The Union Government has notified Mangalore airport as customs airport.

A press release by Mr M.R. Vasudeva, Airport Director, Airport Authority of India (AAI), Mangalore, said here on Thursday that Mangalore airport has been declared as Customs Airport under Section 7(a) of Customs Act 1962. The Department of Revenue, Union Ministry of Finance, has issued a notification in this regard, the release added.

It may be mentioned here that the status of customs airport was essential for Mangalore airport to operate flights to international destination, especially to West Asian countries.

Will help NRIs

Welcoming this notification, Mr A. Srinivasa Rao, President of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industries (KCCI), said that the notification of Mangalore airport as customs airport would be of help for non-resident Indians in West Asia. Air India Express, the low cost airliner of Air India, is planning to operate a direct flight to Dubai from Mangalore from this month.

Mr Rao said that a customs airport in Mangalore would also help boost exports from the region.

Second runway

The AAI has constructed a second runway at the airport with a length of 2,450 mtrs. The runway, which is getting ready for commissioning, can handle bigger aircraft.

Mangalore airport was set up in December 1951 to cater to operations of Dakota aircraft. In 1970, the airport was developed to cater to the operations of Boeing 737.
