Coir States - Andhra Pradesh Seminar on coir industry on May 7 Our Bureau
Visakhapatnam , May 3 A one-day state-level seminar on coir industry is being organised by the Coir Board at Rajahmundry on May 7, according to a press release issued by the regional officer, Mr T.P. Padmanabhan. Urging the entrepreneurs to participate in the seminar and exhibition of products at Hotel River Bay, Rajahmundry, he said the board Chairman, Mr A.C Jose, would preside over it and the local MP, Mr V. Aruna Kumar, would inaugurate it.
Coir fibre output
He said the State is the fourth largest producer of coir with an output of 28,900 tonnes of coir fibre. The utilisation of husk being 31 per cent of the total production of coconuts in the State, there is still plenty of scope for coir production. At present, 41,000 people are employed in the sector in the State, 80 per cent of them being women. There is also a growing export market, with exports fetching Rs 502 crore during 2005-2006. There was 6 per cent growth in export earnings during the year, he said. Coir pith exports, which fetched Rs 38 crore during the year, could be taken up from the State on a large scale, as the product is abundantly available. Mr Padmanabhan said in the release that the Coir Board is extending financial assistance to new units, upgradation of old ones, and is also imparting training to personnel.
