Shipping Fishermen stall work at Gangavaram port Our Bureau
Visakhapatnam , April 27 Fishermen, under the aegis of the Gangavaram Matsyakarula Aikya Vedika, laid seige to the port project site at Gangavaram, on Thursday, seeking rehabilitation for those affected by the project.
The Vedika leader Ch. Rajeswara Rao said they would carry on their protest indefinitely as they were unhappy over continuation of construction work, by Gangavaram Port Ltd, without finalising the rehabilitation package. The protestors insisted that the representatives of the all-party forum and mass organisations be invited for talks convened at the Collectorate. Earlier, the Government invited only the Vedika representatives to take part in talks. ``They are resorting to a divide-and-rule policy. They should invite all of us to the talks, if the Government is really keen on resolving the row over rehabilitation,'' the CPI district secretary, Mr J.V. Satyanarayana Murthy, said.
Govt's stand
``Henceforth, we will hold talks directly with the fishermen and take stringent action, if the protesters take law into their hands,'' the Minister for Commercial Taxes, Mr K. Ramakrishna, said. The Minister said that so far neither the Aikya Vedika nor the all-party forum had conveyed their response in writing to the three options offered by the Government. The Government had earlier offered options such as construction of a jetty 600 metres north of Nallamarammapatalu, relocation of Gangavaram village without jobs or a jetty at Yarada and cash compensation and jobs on the lines of package offered to Dibbapalem villagers. Mr Ramakrishna said there was no justification in wasting time by inviting the all-party forum as the Aikya Vedika alone was competent to decide the fate of Gangavaram fishermen. "The forum leaders have also specified that they will abide by the decision of Aikya Vedika,'' he said.
