Coffee Tribal women's group qualifies for global coffee award Our Bureau
Visakhapatnam , April 26 The coffees grown in the agency (tribal) tracts of Visakhapatnam district (a non-conventional growing area) are attracting recognition in the country and abroad too, according to Mr S. Mushtaq, Deputy Director (extension) of the Coffee Board. He said here on Tuesday that the Coffee Board organises cupping competition every year to select the best coffees grown in the country and encourage growers. Several companies and growers from all over the country participated in the initial rounds of the competition held in Bangalore this year. In all, 199 samples figured in the rounds, of which 40 has made it to the final round to be held in Berne, Switzerland, on May 17.
Big opportunity
Ten coffee samples were sent from Andhra Pradesh, of which two samples grown by co-operatives of tribal women in Visakhapatnam district has made it to the finals. "The objective of the Board in organising the contest in Berne is that it coincides with the Conference and Exhibition of Specialty Coffee Association of Europe, which will also hold the World Barista Championship around the same time in which over 1,000 delegates are expected to participate. It will give us a great opportunity to showcase our coffees,'' he said.
