Govt to modify draft of agri insurance plan

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , April 25

The Union Government has decided to modify the draft of Modified National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (MNAIS), incorporating some important suggestions made by the Andhra Pradesh Government.

Dr Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, wrote to Mr Sharad Pawar, the Union Agriculture Minister, last month asking him to make the scheme more flexible in order to expand the scope of the scheme.

The Chief Minister wanted the Centre to make the gram panchayat as a unit instead of the mandal. He also suggested that the Government should take into consideration the best 3-5 crop years in a decade for calculating the average crop yield. The original proposal was to consider crop performance in the last 3-5 years for arriving at an average crop yield.

Dr Reddy suggested that the insurance scheme should also cover post harvest losses on account of cyclones and heavy rains for a period of two weeks from the date of harvest.

He also wanted the Centre to reduce the undue delays in settlement of claims, a Government release said.
