AP is the first State to implement an automated solution

Hyderabad , April 24

Tata Consultancy Services Ltd has developed a Web-enabled information and communication technology solution for Andhra Pradesh Rural Employment Guarantee System, a scheme under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA).

The solution has gone live in 658 mandals across 13 districts in the State.

The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajaselkhara Reddy, launched this at the CMC campus at Gachibowli. He said it was a unique programme for the poor and the technology solution would ensure that the benefits reach the right person.

With transparency built into it, the system would provide opportunity for public scrutiny by making the entire data available and accessible.

AP is the first State to implement an automated solution for the Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. The scheme is an effort to execute the NREGA, a requirement for every State government.

As per the enactment, every rural household is guaranteed a minimum of 100 days of wage employment every year. In AP, it is estimated that nearly 35 lakh rural households will register for wage employment under the scheme.

The CEO and MD of TCS, Mr S. Ramadorai, said: "AP has had a rich tradition of leveraging technology for the benefit of its citizens and TCS has collaborated with state agencies to create this automated solution to implement the scheme efficiently. This could be a benchmark for future national deployment."

The solution simplifies complex activities of issue of job cards to rural households, identification of work to be undertaken, generation of work estimates, work execution and wage payment.

With this, the time taken to generate work estimates has been reduced from 15-20 days to minutes. The software is the result of an extensive field study across several districts conducted by TCS in close collaboration with the AP's department of rural development. This builds in a transparent wage payment structures through agencies like banks and post offices, bringing in accountability.
