SAIL raw materials unit posts record production

During 2005-06, the Raw Materials Division (RMD) of Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) recorded its highest ever production and dispatched 13.46 million tonnes marking a growth of 12.3 per cent.

The RMD mines at Kiriburu, Meghatuburu, Bolani, Barsua and Kalta produced 13.33 mt, a growth of 3 per cent over the previous year. Gua and Manoharpur in Chiria dispatched 2.9 mt.

In the current fiscal, the RMD has set a target of 18 mt of supply for the eastern sector steel plants of SAIL from its seven mines.

Development projects

To ensure smooth availability of iron ore, various mine development projects have been undertaken, including expansion of Bolani mines to five mt per annum. A 600-tonne per hour crushing and screening plant has been commissioned.

Increase in the loading capacity has been taken up at Bolani mines, which has a proven reserve of 154 mt. Along with this, the central block of Meghatuburu and south block of Kiriburu are also being developed.

The division is also developing the Taldih deposit at Barsua-Taldih-Kalta area. SAIL has got the mining lease in this area. Mining is already on at Barsua and Kalta. For the development of Taldih, SAIL has entered into an agreement with Kudermukh Iron Ore Co Ltd. Mecon has been assigned with the job of preparing a feasibility report. A 2-mt pelletisation plant has been planned. A detailed mining plan is being prepared.
