Kolkata , April 21 The Kolkata-based United Nanotechnologies Pvt Ltd has formed a 50:50 joint venture with NEI Corporation of the US. Christened United Nanotech Products Ltd, the joint venture will manufacture nanotechnology-based lithium-ion battery electrode materials for markets in Asia and South East Asia. Stating this at a news conference held here on Friday, Mr A.C. Chakrabortti, Director of United Nanotech Products Ltd, said the first phase would entail an investment of Rs 8 crore and have a capacity to manufacture 90 tonnes per annum of lithium-ion battery electrode materials. In the next 4-5 years, the capacity would be ramped up to 280 tonnes per annum. To begin with, the company will operate as a 100 per cent export-oriented unit. Mr Chakrabortti said the company was looking to acquire about two-and-a-half acres of land in Kolkata where the manufacturing facility would be set up. The proposed plant would engage about 60 skilled professionals.
Market potential
Mr Shiva Prasad Bevinmarad, Executive Director of United Nanotechnologies, said that, as personal electronic devices get more compact and perform more functions, the batteries that power them must get smaller and lighter, store more energy and retain energy capacity after more number of rechargings. This is where nanomaterial battery electrodes had great market potential.
