Ministry's notification silent on cricket

Viewers can watch the live-telecast of national and international sports events such as the summer and winter Olympics, the Commonwealth and Asian Games on Prasar Bharati for the next five years.

New Delhi , April 20

The new notification issued by the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry has listed international and domestic sporting events that have to be shared with the national broadcaster Prasar Bharati; but it is silent on cricket.

Viewers can get to watch the live-telecast of national and international sports events such as the summer and winter Olympics, the Commonwealth and Asian Games on Prasar Bharati for the next five years.

After consultations with the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, Prasar Bharati, sports channels and sports right holder companies, the Government has ordered that live-feed of tennis, hockey, football, chess, and world championships in billiard and snookers would have to be shared with the public broadcaster.

Earlier two private sports channels — Ten Sports and ESPN — had approached the Courts challenging the mandatory sharing of feed clause.

During the Davis Cup, Prasar Bharati would telecast all matches featuring India and also the semi-finals and finals of the tournament live. In addition, if an Indian player reaches the quarterfinal level of a grand slam tournament, then these matches too would be telecast live.

In the case of hockey, apart from featuring all matches in which India plays during the World Cup, the television channel will not only beam the semi-finals and finals of this tournament live, but also the Beighton and Indira Gandhi Gold Cup for Women.

Apart from the semi-finals and finals of the forthcoming FIFA World Cup, European Cup and Asia cup, the channel will also telecast matches in which India plays at the Asia Cup live.

In the domestic arena, Prasar Bharati will telecast the semi-finals and finals of the Subroto Cup, Federation Cup and Durand Cup apart from the Santosh Trophy, national women football and junior national football championship live.

However, if Doordarshan is unable to telecast an event that it is allowed to, then this would be considered for deletion in the next annual review, an official statement issued here on Thursday today stated.
