The Hindu Business Line : TNAU invention gets IPR patent

A mechanical device that separates with ease the eggs of insects glued on the pulse seed coats, invented by the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), has won intellectual property (IP) patent from the Government of India. This is the first time a farm device from the university gets an IP patent from the Government.

According to the TNAU Vice-Chancellor, Dr C. Ramasamy, the device will remove eggs off pulse beetle and callasobruchus sp. found glued on the seed coat. And it will be useful to prevent loss of pulses in storage affected by beetle eggs as it will facilitate smooth removal of the eggs without damaging the seeds.

The device was created by Mr Mohan, professor of agricultural entomology at the university's Centre for Plant Protection Studies. S o far, there is no mechanical device available for removal of insect eggs stuck on seeds kept in storage and the new invention will go a long way in improving the management of seed storage, a communication from the vice-chancellor said.
