Agitating fishermen on Saturday succeeded in stopping the construction work at the Gangavaram port.

Despite the presence of 1,000 policemen, fishermen numbering around 200 under the aegis of Gangavaram Matsyakarula Aikya Vedika and All-Party Forum went to the project site of the private port and requested Mr Bh.A. Rama Raju, Vice-President of Gangavaram Port Ltd, to instruct his men to stop work.

Mr Raju told the fishermen that he did not want a confrontation with the local villagers and that he was not authorised to ask the contractors to stop work. Then, the fishermen and representatives of various parties requested the workers and crew of Dredge International of Belgium to stop work. On their request, all of them including the crew from Belgium, Spain and Sri Lanka abstained from work, thereby preventing a law and order problem.

Mr Rama Raju explained to the delegation of fishermen and political leaders that the company was in favour of developing the local area. He said that it had voluntarily stopped construction after the March 27 police firing and later on April 6 on the request of the district administration.
