Drishti Soft pioneers an industry-academia partnership

Preethi J.

Begins `thin client' project at IIT-Delhi

Bangalore , April 14

Industry academia partnership is a topic that has been thrashed about over the past year. Yet there are few companies that are walking the talk. Drishti Soft, a three-year-old Gurgaon-based telecom firm, in a pioneering effort, leads the way.

Set up by a bunch of IIT graduates, Drishti seeks out eager students at top-notch institutes such as IITs and RECs. The company hires some, helps others get clients for projects and advises others on entrepreneurship, said Mr Sachin Bhatia, Co-founder and Director, Business Development and HR, Drishti.

The company has made arrangements with IITs Guwahati and Delhi. The company has begun a thin client project at IIT-Delhi, still in the conceptual stage, informed Mr Bhatia. The project involves creating a thin client (a remote basic computer with no peripherals, is connected to a server) using a 900 Mhz ARM processor, the kind that is used in washing machines, said Mr Bhatia. This will save costs, as well as power, he said.

The thin client will offer basic functions such as video, Web browsing and voice over IP, he said. Students at IIT Delhi working on this project were receiving guidance from Drishti, he said.

Explaining the firm's interest only in IITians, Mr Bhatia said, "We understand and know how to motivate an IITian. We share a bond: this helps in the work environment." He said that most IITians have an urge to work, sometimes even without sleep. The company understands and encourages this attitude, acknowledging the effort by each contributor.

Drishti is a $1.7-million telecom firm with expertise in 3G, core networks and mobile applications.
