More SHGs in Karnataka on cards

The Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister, Mr B.S. Yediyurappa, has said that the BJP-JD(S) coalition Government in the State will form 25,000 new Stree Shakti self-help groups (women SHGs) in the next two years. The Karnataka Budget for 2006-07 has earmarked Rs 20 crore for the formation and development of SHGs in the State, he said. Inaugurating a taluk-level convention of Stree Shakti SHGs at Bantwal, near here, on Thursday, he said that socio-economic revolution brought about by SHGs in rural Karnataka is laudable. Citing the role of Stree Shakti SHGs in empowerment of women, he said that women's involvement in economic activities such as preparation of agarbathis, readymade garments and eatables has instilled in them a sense of entrepreneurship. Mr Yediyurappasaid that the Karnataka Budget for 2006-07 proposes to set up buildings in every district to market the products manufactured by women SHGs.
