Mumbai , April 4

Disproving the notion that productivity in private sector is better than public sector, the Government-owned container terminal at the Jawaharlal Nehru port on Tuesday reported that the container traffic handled by it in the last fiscal exceed, though marginally, the P&O-run private terminal — NSICT for the first time.

Out of the total traffic of 2.67 million TEUs handled in 2005-06 (higher by 12.46 over 2.37 million tones last year), the share of the JN port was 1.34 million and NSICT 1.32 million.

Break-up

The remaining 3,920 TEUs were handled the third ( new) terminal- GTIPL.

The JNPT Chairman, Mr Ravi Budhiraja, said higher productivity was the result of better co-ordination, deployment of new equipment and the dedication of employees.

He said the productivity is expected to be higher in the current fiscal.

The total traffic (of all the three terminals) at the JN port accounts for about 58 per cent of the total container traffic of 4.61 million teus handled by all the major ports in the country.

Including the liquid and break bulk cargo, the JN port handled a total volume of 37.75 million tones during 2005-06 as against 32.81 TEUs in the previous year, registering a growth of 15 per cent growth.

Operating income of the JN port increased by 5.13 per cent to Rs 663.55 crore in 2005-06 from Rs 630.08 crore last year.

The operating surplus rose by 7.76 per cent to Rs 368.08 crore as against Rs 358.28 crore last fiscal.

The container traffic handled by Jawaharlal Nehru Port increased by 12.46 per cent during the current fiscal
