The Director-General of the Bureau of Indian Standards, Mr S.P. Sharma, who begins a tour of Kerala next week, will announce the BIS certification scheme for Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS) in the country. The announcement will take place in Kochi on Tuesday.
The FSMS scheme as per IS/ISO 22000:2005 norms integrate the principles of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) system developed by the Codex Alimentarius Commission. It combines the HACCP plan with pre-requisite programmes (PRPs) and operational PRPs.
The scheme also requires that all hazards that may occur in the food chain are identified, assessed and controlled.
Gold hallmarking
The Director-General will also hold an interactive session on hallmarking of gold. Jewellers from the State will participate in the interactive session. The BIS objective behind instituting a credible system of assaying and hallmarking is to protect the consumers from unscrupulous trading practices at the market place. It also aims at enhancing the export competitiveness of gold jewellery.
