Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram , March 30

The Director-General of the Bureau of Indian Standards, Mr S.P. Sharma, who begins a tour of Kerala next week, will announce the BIS certification scheme for Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS) in the country. The announcement will take place in Kochi on Tuesday.

The FSMS scheme as per IS/ISO 22000:2005 norms integrate the principles of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) system developed by the Codex Alimentarius Commission. It combines the HACCP plan with pre-requisite programmes (PRPs) and operational PRPs.

The scheme also requires that all hazards that may occur in the food chain are identified, assessed and controlled.

Gold hallmarking

The Director-General will also hold an interactive session on hallmarking of gold. Jewellers from the State will participate in the interactive session. The BIS objective behind instituting a credible system of assaying and hallmarking is to protect the consumers from unscrupulous trading practices at the market place. It also aims at enhancing the export competitiveness of gold jewellery.

criteria

The BIS hallmark is applied on each article/ornament, after ensuring its purity. The hallmark consists of the BIS mark, the purity mark, the mark of the assaying and hallmarking centre, the mark of the jeweller and year of marking. BIS has recognised a few centres for assaying and hallmarking of gold, after ensuring that they follow the documented BIS criteria that is in line with international norms for sampling, assaying and marking.

Mr Rakesh Verma, Additional Director-General, and Mr V. Kalyanasundaram, Deputy Director-General (Southern Region), BIS, will accompany Mr Sharma on his Kerala tour.
