Kochi strike continues to hit box movement

'Hard to meet year-end contracts'

Kochi , March 29

The trade at the Cochin Port Trust has expressed concern at the manner in which the authorities concerned have dealt with the ongoing strike resorted to by the container trailer crew since Sunday.

Sources in the business community pointed out that the port authorities were not taking efforts to settle the problem, as the strike would definitely have a direct impact on the port's performance in this fiscal.

Requesting the port management to intervene, the sources said the exporters are finding it difficult to meet the year-end contracts

Officials at the container trailer owners' association said the managing committee of the association on Wednesday carried out a one-to-one discussion with each striking union instead of a joint meeting.

Though some of the trade unions have agreed to withdraw from the strike, those belonging to the CITU and the BMS demanded for a settlement before commencement of work. The other unions, in view of the emerging financial year-end and other repercussions, have agreed to withdraw the strike on the condition that a final settlement should be reached by April 15.

However, the indifferent attitude taken by the unions has resulted in the continuation of the strike for the third day on Wednesday disrupting the movement of cargo to and from the port.
