Tech fest at IIT-M

Some 700-800 footfalls are expected at Mechanica 2006, the annual technical festival of the Mechanical Engineering Department of IIT-Madras, according to the department head, Prof S. Srinivasa Murthy. Scheduled to be held from April 1-2, the department expects about 80 colleges to be represented, of which 30 would be outstation colleges. Mechanica 2006 will hold several events such as `Robotics', where the participating teams have to make a robot that performs specified tasks, and `Contraptions', where the participating teams have to make performing a simple task like lighting a candle as complicated as possible with the use of mechanisms. Apart from these, there will also be quizzes and paper presentations. Cash prizes worth totally about Rs 2 lakh will be on offer. The event is being sponsored by several companies such as L&T, Ashok Leyland and Hewlett Packard. Mr Aravind S. Baradwaj, Head of the Technical Division, Ashok Leyland, will inaugurate the event on March 31.
