Kochi , March 20 , The Cochin Port Trust has decided to invite global expressions of interest to appoint consultants for designing a world-class cruise terminal in the northern end of Willingdon Island. The project, envisaged on a public-private-partnership model, will have two components construction of a modern cruise jetty of about 200 metres quay length, in continuation of the existing 917 metre-long Ernakulam wharf; and construction of a world-class cruise terminal complex-cum-multi-purpose public plaza. In order to make the project financially viable, the port trust intends to develop part of the terminal complex as an accessible public destination offering a range of facilities for entertainment and recreation, hospitality, restaurant and dining including food courts; general and specialty malls; culture and arts; health/ayurveda/spa products; business and conferencing/trade exhibitions. The Port Chairman, Mr N. Ramachandran, said the facility would showcase and promote Kerala's traditional culture and art forms, cuisine and its ethnic produce to not only attract foreign and domestic tourists, but also connect to the local people. The project would be environmentally sensitive and tailored to suit Willingdon Island. About 12 acres with waterfront for the berth has been earmarked for the development of the complex. The port is planning to appoint a consultant to develop the plan and prepare a feasibility report and business plan. It is also expected that such a world-class facility will attract more frequent calls by cruise ships including their home porting at Kochi. The facilities are also expected to encourage cruise ships to make calls for longer number of days. The port's vision to establish such a cruise terminal is also intended to support Kerala's tourism industry, he said. The Chairman pointed out that 2005-06 witnessed brisk business in the cruise tourism sector at Kochi. About 19 cruise vessels with more than 10,000 high spending tourists visited Kochi since April last year. Some of the international cruise vessels that visited the port included Pacific Princess, Seabourn Spirit, Super Star Libra, Nautica, Oriana and Aurora. Another luxury cruise vessel Queen Elizabeth 2 is scheduled to visit Kochi on Monday , he said.
