Tax revenues of VAT States up 16 pc in April-Jan

Tax revenues of value-added tax (VAT) implementing States have recorded a 15.53-per-cent increase during April-January 2005-06 to touch Rs 61,030 crore as against Rs 52,825 crore recorded in the same period last year.

So far, 25 States and Union Territories have implemented State-level VAT from April 1 last year. Official sources pointed out that tax revenue growth of these States have settled between the 15-16 per cent levels ever since VAT was implemented in such States/UTs.

Tax revenues of some of the major VAT implementing States during April-January 2005-06 are Delhi: Rs 4,682 crore (Rs 3,381 crore), Maharashtra: Rs 15,034 crore (Rs 13,332 crore), Haryana: Rs 3,655 crore (Rs 3,120 crore), Kerala: Rs 5,366 crore (Rs 4,959 crore), Karnataka: Rs 6,538 crore (Rs 6,019 crore), Punjab: Rs 3,727 crore (Rs 2,903 crore), Andhra Pradesh: Rs 9,724 crore (Rs 8,555 crore) and West Bengal: Rs 4,012 crore (Rs 3,675 crore).

VAT compensation

Meanwhile, the Finance Ministry's Performance Budget 2005-06, tabled in the Lok Sabha by the Minister of State for Finance, Mr S.S.Palanimanickam, here on Friday, said that the Centre has up to February 28, 2006 incurred an expenditure of Rs 1,512.36 crore towards compensation to eight States for revenue loss arising from VAT implementation.

The eight States that have received compensation are Andhra Pradesh (Rs 314.04 crore), Bihar (Rs 135.77 crore), Karnataka (Rs 251.16 crore), Kerala (Rs 456.47 crore), Maharashtra (Rs 259.89 crore), Sikkim (Rs 1.84 crore), Tripura (Rs 5.12 crore) and West Bengal (Rs 88.07 crore).
