The Hindu Business Line : King Koil mattress to roll out in India

The 118-year-old company has floated a subsidiary in India - King Koil Sleep Systems (Private) Ltd of the Dubai-based holding company for the brand (Dubai Furniture Manufacturing Co LLC).

The Indian company will be responsible for marketing and manufacturing the King Koil brand of sleeping products in the country.

Mr S. Sundar Rajan, Director, King Koil Sleep Systems Pvt Ltd, said, "We will be initially importing the products, but in future we intend setting up a manufacturing base either in southern or western India. We also have plans of opening 50 company-owned showrooms within the first year of operations."

Priced at Rs 6,000 upwards for a single spring mattress, King Koil is expected to introduce more products such as pillows, bed covers and even mattress protectors.

The mattress market is estimated at Rs 600-700 crore; spring mattresses comprise Rs 20 crore of the market, according to Mr Rajan. The branded spring mattress segment in India comprises local brands such as Spring Well and Springer and the rest is mainly dominated by coir brands. "There is still no international brand of spring mattress in the country as yet," said Mr Rajan.
