Bridge biotech divide: Reddy

The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has asked farmers not fall prey to the `produce and perish trap'.

"They need to realise the importance of `produce and flourish' equation. If they produce more, they suffer more as increased production means decreased price, benefiting the urban population," he said.

Delivering the inaugural address at the three-day International Conference on `Biotechnology for sustainable agriculture and agro industry' here on Thursday, he said while prices of all other items significantly increased in the past two to three decades, prices of foodgrains, in real terms, were actually halved.

"Tomorrow's agriculture will be different. It is not going to be just producing more, but the products must be of high quality, marketability, and must be produced in less land and with less water," he said.

He also highlighted the growing biotechnology divide between those who developed the technologies and those who actually put them to use. Nine out of ten times, the people who developed these agri biotechnologies did not even see the places where those technologies were employed. He asked scientists and policy makers to make efforts to reduce this divide.

He, then, posed several questions to the scientists. Do these technologies enhance plant and animal production in a sustainable manner? Which technologies are suitable to small farms? These were some of the questions that, he said, required immediate answers.
