Special rubber zone planned

Kochi , March 9

The Kerala State Co-operative Rubber Marketing Federation (RubberMark) today said it plans to set up a special rubber zone comprising 12 rubber-based manufacturing and processing units.

The zone, to be set up on a 12-acre plot, would come up at Vazhakkulam in Ernakulam district, said Mr T.H. Musthafa, President of RubberMark, at a press conference here today.

The land for the purpose has been acquired and operations are expected to commence within a year, Mr Musthafa said. Over 1,000 people are expected to find employment at the zone, which will be established with the support of the Centre.

He said RubberMark exported over 15,000 tonnes of natural rubber during the current financial year, and has set a target of 50,000 tonnes for the next year.

A balloon manufacturing facility, Rubek Balloons, set up by RubberMark in a joint venture with Malaysia-based Kendek, would increase its daily production to 12 lakh balloons from the present eight lakh units, he said. The brand name of the balloons would also be changed to Rubek from `Partyman'.

Mr Musthafa said RubberMark had submitted a Rs 100-crore revival programme for rubber-based co-operatives to the National Co-operative Development Corporation.
