Letters Export growth
This is with reference to "The export growth story" (Business Line, February 7), which talks of export trends. However, there are serious limitations in the database generated from the Director General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCI&S), the main agency providing official data. The base year for these series is still 1978-79. Foreign trade, apart from emerging as an important sector, has undergone radical changes especially in the last decade. The unit value of exports mainly comprises domestic price and exchange rate. This data gap needs to be urgently addressed by academicians and policymakers. Vidya Pitre
