GSM cell subscriber base up 3.2 m in Feb

Total subscriber base crossed the 65-million mark

New Delhi , March 6

Cellular subscription growth kept up its momentum in February with 3.2 million new mobile subscribers being added by the GSM based operators in February. With this, the total subscriber base crossed the 65-million mark to touch 65.2 million subscribers.

"The GSM mobile industry continues to hold 77 per cent of the total mobile market in India and accounts for 74 per cent of the new additions, that is, 3 out of every 4 new mobile subscribers are opting for GSM," said a press release from the Cellular Operator's Association of India (COAI). CDMA-based operators had added 1.2 million new subscribers in February.

Bharti added the maximum with 1.08 million new subscribers taking its total tally to 18.5 million making it the largest mobile operator in the country. Hutch added 7.9 lakh new subscribers.
