NRL set to begin diesel exports to Bangladesh

Pratim Ranjan Bose

Kolkata , March 3

Numaligarh Refinery Ltd (NRL) is set to begin exporting around 1,20,000 tonnes of high-speed diesel (HSD) to Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation from April. The company is also exploring export opportunities in Myanmar.

Given the topographical difficulties in the North-East, sources said that it would be easier for NRL to access the Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Myanmar markets through road, rail and river.

The company is already exporting HSD in small quantities to Bhutan.

NRL now produces close to 1.3 million tonnes Euro-II and Euro-III grade HSD out of a total production of 2.2 million tonnes.

The company will start producing Euro-III grade petrol, cutting down on its naphtha production by over 70 per cent, following completion of a Rs 290-crore project early next year.

Meanwhile, NRL is expecting 10 per cent drop in net profit in 2005-06, which is attributed to substantially higher price discounts offered by standalone refineries and thinning of refinery margins during the year.
