Budget Industry & Economy - Jute Jute industry upset Kohinoor Mandal
Kolkata , Feb. 28 The jute industry is not at pleased with the Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram's Budget announcements on the sector. According to the industry leaders, these are nothing new because the proposal to create a National Jute Board was declared way back in February 2005, when the National Jute Policy was announced. Moreover, the board is not a new organisation, but it is being created after the merger of two existing bodies, Jute Manufactures Development Council and National Centre for Jute Diversification.
`No significant step'
"Almost a year had passed, still the Union Government has not taken any significant step in creating the National Jute Board. So, what is the point in mentioning it again at the Union Budget," a former president of Indian Jute Mills Association asked. He told Business Line that the Jute Technology Mission (replicating the successful Cotton Technology Mission) has been a topic of discussion for several years. It was mentioned in the National Jute Policy too. In fact, the proposal was first floated by the former NDA Government. The corpus for the mission is being pegged at Rs 468 crore.
